The Estepona City Council informs that today, May 13, marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of María Espinosa de los Monteros y Díaz de Santiago in Estepona. A historic activist in the fight for the civil and political rights of women. To coincide with this milestone, the City Council has organized a series of activities throughout 2025. On International Women’s Day, she was posthumously awarded the ‘March 8th Prize’ in recognition of her contribution to achieving equality and improving the role of women. However, Estepona, aware of her value even in her time, named her a Favorite Daughter by the City Council on December 27, 1920.
Ahead of her time, she was an entrepreneur in various business projects. Additionally, she served as the director for Spain of Casa Yost, which marketed the typewriters of the same name for over 20 years, with clients including King Alfonso XIII.
María Espinosa played a prominent role as an activist in defense of the civil and political rights of women. In 1918, she founded and presided over the National Association of Spanish Women (ANME), one of Spain’s first feminist organizations.
Among the activities organized for this anniversary, the Málaga Provincial Publishing Center will print an illustrated album about the life and work of this distinguished woman.
Additionally, a group of 1st-year high school students from IES Mar de Alborán has prepared a performance based on her lecture ‘The Influence of Feminism on Contemporary Legislation,’ delivered at the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation on January 22, 1920. This performance will take place on Friday, June 13 at 12:30 pm in the Auditorium of CC Padre Manuel. This project is led by teacher Cristina García Aragón, who has been working with her students for several years on various coeducational projects to promote the figure of María Espinosa.
The activities will continue throughout the year, aimed at introducing María Espinosa’s legacy to the youth of the municipality, as part of the activities for Estepona’s Year of Youth. According to the Councilor for Women and Youth, Julia Simón Ortega, this is a fantastic opportunity to spread the entrepreneurial and advocacy spirit of this woman among the young people of Estepona.
Según la concejala de Mujer y Juventud, Julia Simón Ortega, esta celebración del 150 aniversario de María Espinosa de los Monteros y Díaz de Santiago en Estepona es una excelente oportunidad para difundir entre los jóvenes el espíritu emprendedor y reivindicativo de esta mujer. María Espinosa fue una figura histórica en la lucha por los derechos civiles y políticos de las mujeres, y su legado sigue siendo relevante en la actualidad.
El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha organizado una serie de actividades para conmemorar este aniversario a lo largo de 2025. Entre ellas, se destacó la entrega del ‘Premio 8 de Marzo’ a título póstumo a María Espinosa por su contribución a la igualdad y al papel de las mujeres en la sociedad. Además, en 1920 fue nombrada Hija Predilecta de Estepona en reconocimiento a su valía y liderazgo.
María Espinosa fue una mujer adelantada a su tiempo, destacándose como emprendedora en varios proyectos empresariales. Durante más de 20 años, fue directora para España de la Casa Yost, que comercializaba máquinas de escribir y contaba entre sus clientes con el Rey Alfonso XIII. Además, fue fundadora y presidenta de la Asociación Nacional de Mujeres Españolas (ANME) en 1918, una de las primeras entidades feministas en España.
Para celebrar su vida y obra, se imprimirá un álbum ilustrado sobre María Espinosa a cargo del Centro de Ediciones de la Diputación de Málaga. Además, un grupo de alumnos del IES Mar de Alborán presentará una representación basada en la conferencia de Espinosa ‘Influencia del feminismo en la Legislación Contemporánea’, que tendrá lugar en junio en el Salón de Actos del CC Padre Manuel.
Estas actividades forman parte de las iniciativas del Año de la Juventud en Estepona, dirigidas a dar a conocer el legado de María Espinosa entre los jóvenes del municipio. La concejala Julia Simón Ortega destaca la importancia de difundir el espíritu emprendedor y reivindicativo de esta mujer entre la juventud local.
