Marbella has today demanded from the central government to reinvest the 2.6 million euros it collects annually from the city for beach occupancy in making improvements to the coast. The Plenary has unanimously approved the proposal presented by the Popular Municipal Group urging the Ministry for the Ecological Transition to carry out continuous contributions of sand from dredging works until the coastal stabilization projects are executed. The councilor in charge, Diego López, has pointed out that, despite the State having collected 16 million euros from sector entrepreneurs and the City Council over the past ten years through this fee, «there has not been a proportional investment for the protection and recovery of our coastline, which has also meant a great economic effort for both the local administration and the private sector, who have to bear the cost of repairing the damage caused by storms.»
The councilor has lamented that «it has been more than 5 years since sufficient sand contributions have been made» and that the latest actions «have been untimely.» «It is essential that these interventions are efficiently planned and that material from dredging deeper areas is used, instead of transferring it from one beach to another, ensuring a more effective and sustainable solution.»
On the other hand, in today’s session, a new step has been taken for the San Pedro Alcántara transport interchange project. Specifically, the transfer of the 8,148 square meter plot located at the intersection between the Ronda road and the A-7 motorway to the Junta for the construction of this facility has been agreed upon. The deputy mayor of San Pedro, Javier García, who recalled that the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, signed a collaboration agreement last February with the Ministry of Development for these facilities, emphasized that they «will respond to interurban collective transport and its connections with urban service.» «It is an important step that will be endorsed by the regional government’s tender for the drafting of the project and the execution of the work,» noted the councilor, who mentioned that the Andalusian government will allocate 1.7 million euros to this project, while the municipal contribution will be 500,000 euros for the urbanization of the adjacent plot.
In urban planning matters, the initial approval of the municipal ordinance regulating public-private collaboration for the processing of urban licenses and other means of intervention in building activity has been granted. The councilor in charge, José Eduardo Díaz, has valued this new regulation, which will expedite the granting of permits through the Málaga Architects’ Association, as «a new milestone in streamlining procedures and decisively driving economic activity.» In this regard, the councilor emphasized that last year, 5,169 building permits were issued with over 315 million euros of investment, and the citizen service office handles 280 inquiries daily.
In the same field, approval has been given for Marbella’s accession to Decree-Law 1/2025 of urgent measures in housing approved by the Andalusian Government to promote the construction of protected housing. In this sense, Díaz has stated that this new regulation «will allow us to increase the supply of land for this type of property, allowing, among other things, changes in use or an increase in building capacity.» «It gives us a framework of possibilities that we cannot let slip away,» he added, while explaining that the City Council has set up a multidisciplinary committee, in coordination with the regional government, «to analyze all possibilities to increase that land bank.»
On another note, two proposals for multi-year investment in the projects of the Nueva Andalucía athletics stadium, which, as García emphasized, «will respond to the demands of local athletes,» and the remodeling and enhancement of the San Pedro Alcántara municipal market, «which requires a renovation of the facilities,» have been approved. Likewise, a motion by the Popular Municipal Group has been approved, urging the central government to urgently review Decree 666/2023 regarding the regulation of veterinary medicines. The Health councilor, Alejandro González, criticized that «more bureaucracy is imposed without dialogue, putting at risk the care of our pets.»
Finally, in the ordinary Plenary session, where Carlos Magro, from the VOX Group, took office as councilor, approval was given to an institutional proposal related to the tribute to the gypsy community of Marbella «for their rich contribution to our society.» The proposal includes, among other initiatives, the celebration during the year 2025 of events and activities that celebrate and promote their culture.
