Día Mundial de Parkinson en Málaga: informar y sensibilizar a la sociedad

The Regional University Hospital of Malaga and the Parkinson Malaga Association carried out an event during World Parkinson’s Disease Day, with the aim of informing and educating society about this neurodegenerative disease.

During the event, the importance of support for patients and families was highlighted, as well as the collaboration between the healthcare field and associations dedicated to this cause.

The opening ceremony, held at the Assembly Hall at the Child’s Hospital in Malaga, was attended by the territorial health and consumer delegate, Carlos Bautista; The general director of the Regional University Hospital of Malaga, José Antonio Ortega; And the head of neurology at the Regional University Hospital of Malaga, Pedro Serrano, along with the president of the Parkinson Malaga Association, Eugenio Agüera.

The aim is to «analyze the current status of this pathology in clinical and research aspects, propose improvements in the quality of life for patients and their relatives, and above all, strengthen connections with medical professionals.»

Over 100 people gathered in the auditorium of the maternal and child hospital, with the presence of medical specialists in Parkinson’s disease, affected individuals, and family members.

It was emphasized that, under the motto, «you don’t give up on themselves,» another objective of the day was to investigate the latest advancements in the treatment of this pathology, the lines of action of expert professionals in neurology, and to learn more about how people with Parkinson’s disease feel in their society and what they need in their society.

The program included roundtable discussions where aspects of early diagnosis and the challenges patients face in their daily lives were discussed.

Issues such as changes in sleep, depression, impulse control disorders, and cognitive deficits can significantly affect their quality of life.

Furthermore, balance changes and walking difficulties are significant barriers to their autonomy, emphasizing the complexity of this disease.

The general director of the Regional University Hospital of Malaga, José Antonio Ortega, emphasized that «these kinds of days are essential for raising awareness, promoting knowledge about this disease, and strengthening collaboration between healthcare professionals and associations like Parkinson Malaga, whose activity is crucial.»

On the other hand, the president of the Parkinson Malaga Association, Eugenio Agüera Serrano, explained that «for those living with Parkinson’s disease, patients and families, support and empathy are essential.»

«Days like this are a key opportunity to make our experiences visible, eliminate stigma, and share tools that improve our quality of life,» he added.
