The Estepona City Council informs that the works aimed at the comprehensive renovation of the Municipal Archaeological Museum facilities have begun, where the exhibition space will be doubled. In this way, the new rooms that will be enabled on the upper floor will allow the public to see dozens of archaeological pieces that have been stored until now due to lack of space.

The planned action will double the exhibition space currently available at the museum, which opened a decade ago and is located in an 18th-century building built on top of a cistern belonging to a Muslim-era tower. The intervention includes the demolition of part of the partition walls on the upper floor, leaving open areas for new rooms.

The archaeological works carried out in recent years, which have unearthed dozens of pieces that speak of the origins of the city of Estepona, make it necessary to provide the museum with more rooms so that these important vestiges can be shown to the public. Most of these pieces date back to prehistoric, Roman, and Islamic periods, and only a small amount has been exhibited so far in a temporary display. The aim of this new municipal project is for these collections to have their definitive space within the museum.

The project, which has an investment of 97,999 euros (VAT included), includes other interventions that will involve a comprehensive remodeling of the facilities. Thus, the installation of an elevator is planned, with the consequent renovation of the existing toilets on the ground floor of the building. At the same time, other complementary actions will be carried out, such as the renovation of the flooring in the central courtyard, which will be at the same level and where the fountain will be removed. The cistern will be left with its access opening visible, covered by structural glass.

On the other hand, the carpentry on the upper floor facing the courtyard will be rehabilitated, correcting discrepancies and replacing deteriorated hardware. It is even planned to sand and varnish them anew. Likewise, the steps of the staircase will be renovated, replacing broken pieces and rearranging the formation of the steps.

The Estepona Municipal Archaeological Museum building consists of a ground floor and two floors and is formed by a central courtyard where the cistern is located. On both floors, there is a porticoed gallery around the central courtyard that leads to the different rooms. The installation of the elevator will involve the renovation of the existing toilets on the ground floor. The deadline for the completion of the works has initially been set at six months.
