Concierto coral e instrumental por el Día Europeo de la Música en San Francisco.

As a result of this continental commemoration, the musical group will delight the audience with a sample of varied genres from the symphonic choral repertoire, including baroque dances, Bach, tango, bolero, opera, or film music, among others.

The event is scheduled for June 21st at 9:00 pm and is part of a series of outdoor activities, festivals, workshops, concerts, and performances in public spaces in celebration of European Music Day.

The line of action of the Department of Culture of the City Council of Vélez-Málaga continues decisively to promote all kinds of initiatives and activities that aim to energize the daily life of our residents, in a wide range characterized by exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and various cultural proposals aimed at promoting and enhancing our monumental and heritage richness.

In line with this approach, a choral concert is being held on the occasion of «European Music Day,» a date celebrated in our continent every June 21st. The Councilor for Culture, Alicia Ramírez, has announced, along with the president and secretary of the choir, Aurora González and Celeste Martín, a dense and varied program of activities, in line with «a special occasion to enjoy and share music, celebrate musical diversity, the richness of genres and styles,» specifying in this regard that «it is crucial that we enhance these lines of work through the authors, who have always provided immeasurable value to our history in their national and international journey.»

Therefore, the Department has organized a plan of activities, for the second consecutive year, outdoors, including festivals, workshops, concerts, and performances in public spaces. Among them, a choral and instrumental concert takes center stage, performed by the chamber orchestra of the choir «Friends of Music» from the municipality, composed of 14 members who showcase their performance with string, wind, and piano instruments. The event will take place on Saturday, June 21st, starting at 9:00 pm, in the cloister of the Real Convent of San Francisco in Vélez-Málaga.

«This is an excellent group made up of teachers and mostly students of higher music education. The master of ceremonies is Manuel Sanchidrián, a music teacher at the Martín Tenllado Conservatory in Malaga and composer and director of several Malaga choirs. The choir «Friends of Music» has a long and prolific history of 37 years serving Vélez-Málaga, and is a musical collective of recognized prestige known for its regular participation in social and cultural activities at the local and regional level. On the 21st, they will perform a mix of varied musical genres from the symphonic choral repertoire including baroque dances, Menuet, Bach, tango, bolero, and film music, among others.

On her part, the head of «Friends of Music,» Aurora González, has expressed gratitude for the Department’s efforts in implementing and promoting these types of initiatives, where «we all put a lot of interest and passion,» in the development of a musical style on which she wanted to reflect: «We are a group of about 30-35 members, mostly women, but I want to call on all those men who enjoy lyrical and this type of music to join our choir and be part of our history,» Aurora González urged.

The European Music Day is originally conceived as a day to advocate for and promote music as a universal language of humanity. To understand why it takes place on June 21st, we must go back to 1976 when musician Joël Cohen, who was an assistant to the director of France Musique, proposed celebrating the ‘Saturnales of Music’ twice a year, as a sort of musical solstice: on June 21st and December 21st.

«I want to encourage all residents and those who want to join us from outside to a very special music event, where we will enjoy different activities and savor a beautiful concert by ‘Friends of Music,’ where we will have a great time thanks to the excellent work they have been carrying out in Vélez-Málaga for over 30 years.»
