For the summer season of 2025, we keep the six adapted beaches in the municipality fully operational, fully equipped so that people with reduced mobility can enjoy the sea on equal terms and with total safety.
The Beach Department of the Vélez-Málaga City Council presented this Tuesday morning the adapted bathing service and accessible beaches along the coastline of the municipality. «This information is undoubtedly a source of pride for all the residents of our municipality, who currently have one of the most accessible and secure coastlines on the Costa del Sol,» as pointed out by the deputy mayor of Vélez-Málaga and deputy mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia.
Also in attendance were the Beach Councilor, David Vilches; and representatives from Amivel, Cristina Quintero and Francisco Aguilar, who have seen firsthand the improvements made for this season on beaches such as the central lifeguard station in Torre del Mar.
In this way, Pérez Atencia stated, «From the Beach Department, we want to announce that we continue to strengthen our commitment to inclusion and accessibility on our coastline. For the summer season of 2025, we keep the six adapted beaches in the municipality fully operational, fully equipped so that people with reduced mobility can enjoy the sea on equal terms and with total safety.»
The adapted beaches will be located at the following points:
– Benajarafe: Paseo Marítimo «Antigua Estación».
– Torre del Mar: Laguna Chica, El Faro, Antiguo Balneario, Central Lifeguard Station.
– Caleta de Vélez: Río Seco (Entrance to the port).
«These areas are not only physically adapted, but also have specialized services that guarantee an inclusive experience,» Atencia affirmed. Among them are accessible walkways, shaded areas, hammocks, and adapted showers. Accessible lifeguard towers, amphibious chairs for adults, children, and XXL size. Amphibious crutches, walkers, and adapted floaters. Support staff and assistance for bathing, including sign language interpreters during July and August and transfer crane.
Furthermore, they have service notebooks and Braille panels, adapted changing rooms, and wheelchair storage at various points. Regarding the service period, we inform that the assisted bathing service is available at the six adapted beaches in the municipality, ending on August 31st.
With this initiative, «we consolidate our municipality as a reference in accessible tourism on the Costa del Sol, ensuring that all people, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy the sea and our natural environment without barriers. We want to continue building a more inclusive, more humane, and fairer tourist destination. Because access to our beaches must be, and will continue to be, for everyone.»
David Vilches, Beach Councilor of the Vélez-Málaga City Council, highlighted that «this year we continue to advance in a project that is already fully consolidated: making our beaches accessible to all people, without exception. We want to highlight the small improvements we have implemented for the year 2025 within our investment plan.»
These actions, according to the councilor, «are the result of constant maintenance and gradual growth, always in line with the needs expressed by our colleagues and friends at Amivel. Over the years, they have guided us and pointed out the areas where we can continue to improve, especially as the number of beach users grows. We are proud to know that more and more people seek to enjoy our adapted beach areas, which include facilities such as adapted bathrooms and other resources designed for inclusion. This has made us a reference at the local and provincial levels, which is a great advantage as it motivates us to continue improving to meet the expectations of those who visit us.»
Vilches wanted to «especially thank Jesús Pérez Atencia for his work on the facilities of our 22 kilometers of beach, from Chilches to Lagos. His work has been essential in providing spaces that respect accessibility and inclusion. Finally, I want to reiterate my gratitude to Amivel, whose constant commitment to the improvement of our adapted beaches allows us to continue growing, step by step, in the goal of offering an accessible environment where all people, regardless of their mobility, can enjoy a day at the beach in total normalcy.»
From the AMIVEL collective, «we want to publicly thank Jesús Pérez Atencia, Deputy Mayor of Torre del Mar, Beach Councilor David Vilches, and the entire La Caleta Deputy Mayor’s Office, for allowing us once again to be an active part of what we are experiencing this summer on our beaches.»
AMIVEL has especially appreciated «the increase in shaded areas on the beaches, which has been one of our demands for many years. Gradually, these improvements are solidifying, and it is gratifying to see how what was once a request becomes a reality that benefits many people. We also want to convey an important message to both public institutions and the general public. We ask institutions not to skimp on resources to continue investing in accessibility in all aspects of public life, not only at the beach but also in the city, such as the removal of architectural barriers, lowering of curbs, and improvement of urban mobility.»
To the public, «we ask for responsibility and awareness when using these facilities. These improvements have not only been an achievement of collectives and institutions but are a common good and must be respected by all. The resources allocated to these services are limited, and maintaining them in good condition is essential to continue advancing in the normalization of accessibility. Avoiding vandalism and misuse of these services is essential to ensure that they continue to function over time.»
From AMIVEL, «we remain committed to the full inclusion of people with functional diversity. Normalization is key so that everyone, regardless of their condition, can enjoy a city that serves everyone, without distinction. We are very pleased with the path we have traveled so far, but we know that there is still much to be done, especially regarding accessibility in other urban areas. Therefore, we will continue to insist on improving infrastructure and eliminating any barriers that prevent full participation in society.»
