The Department of the Elderly has planned a dense schedule of initiatives including fashion shows, micro-theater, choir meetings, workshops, a basic life support course to act in emergency situations, and a visit to the Cerro hermitage to contemplate our Crowned Virgin of Remedies.

Cultural, festive, and leisure activities for the municipality of Vélez-Málaga do not rest for a moment. After enjoying a weekend full of events and initiatives for all ages, new proposals are already being worked on to provide content for the daily lives of our residents, aimed at children and the elderly, with the latter being the central focus this time. Our most experienced citizens, after recently enjoying organized trips to Seville or the Corralones of Malaga, not to mention the beautiful day of the Passion of Cajiz, are already preparing their best outfits for the long-awaited XVI Active Seniors Days, a multi-day mega event that will have them as the absolute and undisputed protagonists around a very original and varied program.
This unique and comprehensive event will be «a very interesting way for seniors to make the most of their time with all kinds of plans to promote their active predisposition,» emphasized Juan Fernández Olmo, the Elderly Affairs Councilor who presented today a set of days «truly beneficial for our older residents.» Over 10 days, from May 19 to 30, activities of various kinds will take place in a program «prepared by and for them, because for years they have worked for their families and for the development of our municipality, and the least they deserve is to be given the opportunity to enjoy everything we can provide,» the municipal councilor emphasized.
Under the motto «Live, enjoy, and participate,» a schedule is encompassed that leaves no detail unturned, besides presenting as a great advantage the structuring of all these initiatives spread throughout the municipal area and in the senior centers, with fashion shows, theater, choir meetings, excursions, workshops, exhibitions, and countless more opportunities for the elderly. Diverse Programming
The Department of the Elderly, as popularly paraphrased, has gone all out to organize the best welcome to these XVI Active Seniors Days, which will kick off on the 19th at 6:00 p.m. with a fashion show and micro-theater next to the Wall in Constitution Square. The following day, there will be social gatherings around the choir meeting at the Exile Center, starting at 11:00 a.m., with the participation of Capuchins, Torre del Mar, Lagos, and CPA Vélez-Málaga. On May 21, there will be a visit to Cuevas de San Marcos and Rute, destinations with great Andalusian tradition, departing at 8:00 a.m.
There will be workshops on May 22 and 26, with demonstrations by instructors and performances by Lucía Salazar, Carmen Román, Ángel Checa, and Mari Carmen Romero at the Torre del Mar senior center, and secondly, an exhibition of painting and recycling workshops at the Capuchins center, at 10:00 a.m. Similar displays will take place from 11:00 a.m. at the Caleta de Vélez Deputy Mayor’s Office.
One of the activities focused on learning in society is the basic life support course, to learn the main concepts and tools in caring for people at risk of life, drowning, or choking situations. These training sessions will take place on May 27 and 28 at Capuchins and Torre del Mar, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with a limit of 12 spots for each session.
To put the finishing touch on these magnificent days of learning and activity for seniors, on May 27 there will be a guided visit to our Sublime Patroness and Perpetual Mayoress, the Crowned Virgin of Remedies, where attendees will be enlightened about the extraordinary hermitage and the excellent mural work of our famous artist Evaristo Guerra. On May 29, music will take center stage with a dance exhibition by the Municipal Centers and CPA Vélez-Málaga at the Torre del Mar headquarters, an ideal closing party that will precede the closing ceremony on May 30 at the Exile Center. «I encourage all our older and younger neighbors to attend the events and activities we have planned, they will have a great time and will be able to learn, have fun, and share experiences with their peers,» concluded Juan Fernández Olmo, Elderly Affairs Councilor.
