  • The Mijas Town Hall will provide buses to facilitate access to the site

Mijas, February 20, 2025.- The archaeological legacy of Mijas is immeasurable. A good example of this is the Cortijo Acebedo site, and to make it known, the Senior Department of the Mijas Town Hall, in collaboration with the Historical Heritage Department, has organized a series of visits and talks for the seniors of the municipality.

This was announced this morning by the Senior Councilor, Silvia Marín, the Historical Heritage Councilor, Lourdes Burgos, and the department coordinator, Desirée Piñero, who explained that this outreach activity is free for seniors in the municipality and the first time it is being held. Thus, on March 7, a talk will be held at the Active Participation Center of Las Lagunas, while on the 18th it will be in La Cala, and on the 21st in Mijas Pueblo. All appointments will be at 11:00 a.m.

As explained by the Senior Councilor, Silvia Marín, «this initiative aims to offer seniors a social and cultural activity framed in the promotion of active aging. Meetings in cultural spaces promote social interaction, combating the isolation that often accompanies aging.»

In these talks, the staff of the Heritage Department will explain in a friendly and general public-oriented way everything known so far about this archaeological site, from the moment of its discovery to the current work being carried out through a General Research Project. Additionally, they will present a brief description of all the findings that have taken place during the various archaeological excavation activities, maintaining a chronological order, along with a display of some of the located objects.

The purpose of the conferences is to serve as a prelude to a subsequent guided visit to the archaeological site, promoting the immersive nature of the proposal. The first one will be on March 14 for seniors in Las Lagunas, March 25 for those in La Cala, and on the 28th for users of Mijas Pueblo. All will be at 11:00 a.m., and buses will be provided to facilitate access to Cortijo Acebedo.

The seniors attending this activity will explore the different excavated areas of the archaeological site following a chronological line that will take them from a Phoenician cremation necropolis, through a Roman pottery complex composed of various ceramic production kilns, to end up alongside the remains of a thermal space or balneum, also corresponding to the Roman phase.

According to Lourdes Burgos, Councilor of the Heritage Department, «these types of proposals offer multiple benefits for the mental health of our seniors, and we also give them the opportunity to know in detail the rich heritage of Mijas, promoting their curiosity and making them part of the latest discoveries and work carried out.» Something that Desirée Piñero, department coordinator, also wanted to highlight, for whom «active aging through culture is not just an option, but an opportunity to rediscover life in all its fullness.»

To participate in these activities, it is necessary to register in advance at the various Senior Department offices in Mijas or through the phones 951.06.20.06, 952.46.15.49, 649.87.30.51, or 696.56.31.89. Spaces are limited.
