As a symbol of the commemoration, on March 7 and 8, the hermitage of Cerro and the fountain of the Virgen del Carmen in Torre del Mar will be illuminated in purple, in addition to the placement of a commemorative ribbon on the facade of the Town Hall.
Jesús Pérez Atencia, first Deputy Mayor of the municipality of Vélez-Málaga and Deputy Mayor of Torre del Mar; the councilor for Social Affairs, Juan García; María Victoria Pita, informer at the Women’s Center; María José Lara, legal advisor at the Women’s Center; and Francisca Grueso, counselor at the center, have presented the planned activities to commemorate International Women’s Day.
In this way, Juan García highlighted that «the Vélez-Málaga Town Hall, through the Delegation of Social Rights and Equality and the Municipal Women’s Information Center, has presented the program of activities to commemorate March 8, International Women’s Day.»
Under the motto of equality and social justice, «various initiatives have been organized aimed at the entire population with the objective of making visible the role of women in society and raising awareness about the importance of gender equality,» added the councilor.
Among the most prominent activities is the institutional event on March 7 in Plaza de Las Carmelitas, where the manifesto approved in the municipal council will be read.
Additionally, the event «Shared Experiences. Trajectories for Equality» will take place on March 7 at the Center for Exile Studies, where women leaders in the municipality will share their experiences in areas such as health, education, citizen participation, and the business world.
The program also includes the theatrical performance «I am neither a heroine…, nor do I want to be one,» by the Ted-Teatro company, on March 20 at the Teatro del Carmen. This play addresses with humor and music the challenges that women face today.
Furthermore, educational workshops will be held in high schools and schools in the area to raise awareness among young people and children about gender-based violence and sexual and affective education.
On the other hand, on April 9, 10, and 11, «The Adventures of the Fearless Valentina» will be staged at the Teatro del Carmen, a children’s play about empowering girls.
