Brotes de sarampión en Pepinier, Fuengirola: situación controlada

The General Directorate of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Planning of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Board of Directors declares two of the measles outbreaks detected this year inactive, declared in a nursery in Fuengirola (Málaga), which had 10 cases, all under one year. However, it confirms the declaration of four new isolated cases, bringing the total to 53 cases in Andalucía this year.

Given this situation, the ministry has taken new measures to strengthen the measles monitoring and alert protocol, as the international context of active virus circulation presents new cases, even though the community vaccination rate exceeds the 95% recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In fact, as stated in a declaration, 26% of the cases were imported from Morocco (12), Belgium (one), and Denmark (one). Of the non-imported cases, 12 cases are unknown in terms of the source of infection (six from the municipality of Málaga, two from Marbella, one from Álora, one from Calañas, one from Huelva, and one from Palos de Fronera).

Of the 53 confirmed cases in Andalucía, 43% were under 15 and 57% were adults (aged 18 to 65). Only two cases had a history of vaccination with one dose, 26 cases were unvaccinated, and in 25 cases, their vaccination status could not be determined. 42% of the specified cases required hospitalization (four cases with pneumonia).

In 2025, seven confirmed measles outbreaks have been declared so far, two of which were closed due to the absence of new cases in the next 46 days following the last case.

The last inactive outbreak detected was on February 6 in a nursery in Fuengirola (Málaga), with 10 cases, all related to an imported case and an attack rate in the zero to twelve-month age group of 50%. This was the most significant outbreak in terms of the number of cases so far.

The third of the outbreaks, declared on February 18, occurred in a Secondary Education Institute in Mijas (Málaga) with six cases, from an unknown source, with two generations of cases, the first in the center with three cases and the second in a family, also with three cases.

On March 1, an imported outbreak was declared in Gibraleón (Huelva) with four cases, affecting Moroccan workers who arrived in Spain on February 10. A school of aviation in Málaga also reported an outbreak on March 17, with two confirmed cases and one case under confirmation.

The sixth outbreak was declared the day after, on March 18, with three confirmed cases in the same family in Málaga. The seventh outbreak, from Family Field, involving two Moroccan workers, was declared on March 29 in Moguer (Huelva).

From provinces

Across the provinces, Almería recorded five isolated cases (one in Adra, two in El Ejido, one in Níjar, and another in Roquetas del Mar); Granada reported three isolated cases; Huelva, a total of eleven cases (one in Calañas, two in Gibraleón, one in Huelva capital, two in Moguer, three in Palos de Frontra, one in San Bartolomé de la Torre, and another in San Juan del Puerto); Málaga, 33 cases (10 in Fuengirola, 11 in Málaga capital, seven in Mijas, two in Marbella, one in Álora, one in Ojén, and another in Rincón de la Victoria) and one in Sevilla capital.

In the province of Málaga, the cases are mainly concentrated in the Costa del Sol Health District (20 cases). Health and consumer affairs remind, as confirmed by the data recorded, that measles is an easily transmitted infection, can be severe, and can affect both unvaccinated children and adults.

For this reason, it recommends vaccination for minors according to established guidelines and for adults without a vaccination record to protect those who cannot be vaccinated (children under twelve months, representing 15% of the cases reported in Andalucía).

The ministry will soon start vaccinating the second dose at 15 months in basic health areas where outbreaks have been declared to protect these minors.

The epidemiological situation in the Andalucía region, especially in Morocco, which has been facing a significant measles outbreak since October 2023 and has spread to the country with over 40,000 reported cases, including 150 deaths; As well as the presence of vulnerable pockets that could be significant in some districts and the seasonality of measles (spring), may lead to new outbreaks in the coming weeks and months. The Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs will provide a weekly report on Tuesdays with updated data.
