Cultura promueve programa de fomento de la lectura en Vélez-Málaga

The proposal driven by the Delegation, which will feature book presentations, storytelling, talks, and other initiatives in the coming months, aims to strengthen the wide range of services offered by these spaces to users and residents, as well as to promote the creation of environments for coexistence and interaction for knowledge and learning on different topics and social exchange.

To promote reading habits, there is a new modality of branch libraries, which will be inaugurated in the nuclei of Triana and Chilches, adding to the work provided in the libraries available in the municipal area, with access to in-person and online loans, as well as viewings of films, documentaries, and other genres. All these services are free.

The Department of Culture of the Vélez-Málaga City Council continues to promote new initiatives and activities aimed at fostering the knowledge and learning of citizens in various aspects. In this line of action, efforts have been made recently in an essential reference for the population, the promotion of reading habits.

Promoting reading is one of the fundamental pillars for the development of society, as demonstrated in the successful meeting of book clubs in the Axarquía that took place in Vélez-Málaga recently, where numerous residents and visitors participated in a gathering focused on the need to make this practice regular, in an environment that sparked great interest and connectivity among the different regional groups present.

Following the outlined program, the Department of Culture has organized a series of activities to be carried out in the coming months in the libraries and branch libraries of our municipality. «We are aware of the importance of these facilities today, not only in promoting reading but also in encouraging these spaces as meeting points for direct and interactive experiences,» emphasized Alicia Ramírez, the delegate of the area. She highlighted the crucial significance of this theme «throughout the municipal area, especially in areas where cultural infrastructures are scarcer, making the branches the easiest way to access these sources of learning, participation, and dialogue.»

The Vélez-Málaga library will host a literary event with Tony Jiménez, one of the most prominent authors in the horror genre in Spain, on Thursday, April 3rd, starting at 8:00 PM. Jiménez, known for his artistic connection to Stephen King and other influences in his established career, will share readings of his stories, discuss his trajectory, and answer questions from the audience.

The central focus of this dynamic program in library environments will be on April 23rd, World Book Day and the anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes’ death, where symbolic carnation distribution will take place for all attendees. The branch libraries in Triana and Chilches will be inaugurated first, followed by a series of storytelling sessions in all municipal facilities. Specific activities will take place in Almayate (April 21), Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar (April 23), Benajarafe (April 24), Caleta de Vélez (April 25), Triana (April 29), and Chilches (April 24).

Additionally, Alicia Ramírez announced the launch of the competition for designing the logo of the Public Libraries Network of Vélez-Málaga, which will be open to all high schools in the municipality.

In October, the first meeting of horror novel authors will take place at the Vélez-Málaga library, featuring book presentations and talks on the genre. Halloween activities, including a micro-story workshop, will be held in November, with Christmas decorations and related proposals scheduled for December.

The Councilor for Culture highlighted the extensive services routinely provided in the library sector, including online loans of novels, essays, and other genres, access to daily newspapers, magazines, and other publications (via the e-Biblio platform). Additionally, users can watch all kinds of movies, series, or documentaries through Efilm-Andalucía.

«To access all these digital contents, our residents simply need to visit one of our libraries or branch libraries, where they will be assisted by our staff, who will provide all the information and help to access these services, which are, of course, free,» concluded Ramírez.
