The Ayuntamiento de Vélez-Málaga held its monthly Plenary session on Friday, June 27th in the Plenary Hall, presided over by Mayor Jesús Lupiáñez.
The main focus of this ordinary Plenary session was the approval of Bernardo Quintero Ramírez as the Honorary Son of the City of Vélez-Málaga. Quintero is an international reference in cybersecurity and currently holds the position of Google’s security chief in Málaga. The proposal for this distinction, led by Mayor Jesús Lupiáñez, received unanimous support from the municipal representatives, solidifying Quintero’s recognition as a distinguished figure in cybersecurity and a beloved figure in Vélez-Málaga.
Lourdes Piña, spokesperson for the Popular Municipal Group, emphasized the importance of honoring a local citizen who has brought pride and responsibility to Vélez-Málaga on a global scale. The designation of Quintero as the Honorary Son of Vélez-Málaga, alongside his recent Honorary Doctorate from the University of Málaga, aims to recognize and dignify his exceptional journey with the highest distinction bestowed by the municipality.
In another proposal, the Popular Municipal Group unanimously supported the institutional manifesto of the Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) in honor of International LGBTQ Pride Day. This initiative aims to promote inclusivity and work towards legal and social recognition for the LGBTQ community.
The Plenary session also addressed proposals to enhance the local government, including the installation of shade islands in pedestrian areas of the Historic Center of Vélez-Málaga and the urban center of Torre del Mar. Additionally, the session discussed the approval of a plan to boost cleaning services in the municipality, with a focus on maintaining the cleanliness and condition of the streets.
Furthermore, the municipal government supported measures to address criminality in the province, advocating for an urgent action plan against rising violent crimes in Málaga. The session also approved the establishment of local festivities on specific dates in 2026.
Overall, the Plenary session highlighted important decisions and initiatives aimed at honoring distinguished individuals, promoting inclusivity, enhancing urban development, and addressing critical issues facing the community.
