Vélez-Málaga once again takes center stage in a major event like the one held in the capital of Cadiz, thanks to our illustrious local thinker. The jury of the competition has decided to award the prize to the choir «Cádiz, el show», whose song «Buscan un nuevo cielo» ignited the audience at the spectacular stage during the semifinals of the Official Carnival Group Contest (COAC) 2025. Their lyrics, along with those of other participating groups, paid homage to the legacy of our most internationally renowned neighbor.
The name of Vélez-Málaga has once again been on one of the most important stages in Andalusia, thanks to our municipality’s privileged position for the third consecutive year at the Cadiz Carnival, all thanks to one of our most internationally recognized neighbors, the illustrious thinker Maria Zambrano. The prestigious carnival event in Andalusia, a national reference, has honored the Velezian philosopher among its awardees within the framework of the Official Carnival Group Contest (COAC) 2025, through the III Contest «Maria Zambrano Prize», which holds a third edition to pay tribute to all those groups that included samples of the thoughts of the illustrious author from Vélez-Málaga in their songs. The mentioned prize will be awarded on Tuesday, March 11 at the Teatro Falla in the capital of Cadiz.
We have learned that the jury of the event finally decided on March 3 at 12:00, awarding the tribute to Zambrano to the choir «Cádiz, el show», directed by Luis Rivero and Juan Manuel Moreno Gandul. The group received a cash prize of 2,000 euros for their performance of «Buscan un nuevo cielo», a tango they performed on the stage of the grand Teatro Falla in the capital of Cadiz during the semifinal round of the Official Carnival Group Contest (COAC). The jury members highlighted the emotion of the song, which moved the audience to the rhythm of the work of our Maria Zambrano.
This award, established by the Maria Zambrano Foundation in collaboration with the Honorary Assembly of Golden Antifaces of Cadiz, aims to recognize songs that promote values such as freedom, equality, and social commitment, essential pillars of the ideology of the Velezian philosopher. Through this event, the Foundation once again emphasizes «the commitment to the dissemination and promotion of the ideals of Maria Zambrano, integrating them into cultural expressions as deeply rooted as the Carnival of Cadiz,» highlighted the mayor of the city and president of this organization, Jesús Lupiáñez, «very proud of the work being done by the Foundation,» in addition to making available, «as we have always wanted,» the City Council of Vélez-Málaga to «highlight, every day, the trajectory and international prestige of one of our most recognized and renowned citizens,» consolidated over decades as «a leader of thought for many philosophers and countless generations of people who have grown up with her legacy as a reference.»
Consolidated Award
In its first edition, the prize was awarded to the group «La Tía de la Tiza», for their song «Aviones de Papel», a brilliant and profound staging in the transmission of values by Antonio Pedro Serrano «El Canijo» and José María Barranco «El Lacio». Last year, the group «La rebalaera», led by Nene Cheza, triumphed. «These awards reflect the commitment of the Cadiz Carnival to the promotion of universal values and the dissemination of the thoughts of our Maria Zambrano through their songs,» concluded the mayor, Jesús Lupiáñez, who reiterated «the need to continue praising our illustrious neighbor as an extraordinary thinker and the best ambassador for Vélez-Málaga.»
