The Ciudad de Marbella Theater will host the premiere of the play ‘The King is Dying’, by Eugene Ionesco, on Saturday, May 17th, who, along with Beckett, is the main representative of the so-called ‘Theater of the Absurd’. The performance, scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and performed by the Atalaya company, marks a milestone in its 42-year history. It features a fun, colorful, and rhythmic text that portrays a grotesque microcosm filled with fears and exaggerated yet human emotions.
Aurora Casado, Jerónimo Arenal, Marga Reyes, Joaquín Galán, and Marina Miranda accompany ‘King Berenguer IV’, who is informed at the beginning of the show that he will «die before it ends.» This monarch, who believes himself to be immortal and has brought the kingdom and nature to disaster, only has an hour and a half left to live. A sharp critique in a musical key, with nods to other legendary Atalaya shows, ‘King Lear,’ and Molière’s ‘The Miser,’ but with a more contemporary language. A text performed by great names in the global scene (Alec Guinness, Geofrey Rush, Susan Sarandon, among others) that has not been presented nationally in the last twenty years and marks the company’s second foray into the theater of the absurd following their success with ‘Waiting for Godot.’
Sario Téllez and Ricardo Iniesta repeat as co-directors, with Ana Arteaga in charge of the set design and Carmen de Giles and Flores de Giles in charge of costume design, following the nominations received at the Lorca Awards. More information and ticket sales at this link
