The City of Vélez-Málaga’s Department of Culture has launched a new initiative for individuals over 55 years old. These individuals can now register for courses that will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 p.m. Those interested can sign up in person at the El Pesós building or by calling 667 38 95 30. There are 130 spots available.
The courses will cover topics related to tourism, genetic research, and the study of prominent writers. The courses will run until May 29th and will be taught by qualified instructors from the University of Malaga (UMA). Additionally, a cultural trip or activity will be organized for participants.
The cultural department of the city of Vélez-Málaga introduced the senior courses this morning, a program that has been launched for another year in collaboration with the UMA. This initiative aims to enhance the engagement of the local administration in providing educational opportunities for individuals over 55 years old. The courses will begin on February 18th and will continue until May 29th at the Veleño Exile Center.
Alicia Ramírez, the cultural councilor, presented the aforementioned courses earlier today. She announced that 93 students participated in 2024, leading to an increase in the number of available spots to 130. Just like in previous years, participants in these university courses for individuals over 55 will have the opportunity to join a cultural or exhibition activity in Malaga.
The cultural activities are carried out under the motto «Culture also educates,» as stated by Alicia Ramírez. The goal of this initiative is to provide individuals who have completed their working years or are in other circumstances with access to education and culture from a university perspective. The instructors teaching the courses are professionals from UMA, and participants who attend 70% of the sessions will receive a diploma. The classes are free of charge and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 p.m.
The training program will cover a wide range of classical and contemporary topics. Courses will include «The Journey of Our Genes,» focusing on the basics of genetics and related diseases, as well as «Tourism in Andalusia» and other subjects like «Stigma Against Andalusians,» «Confluence of Arts and Sciences in the 21st Century,» «Women of the Middle Ages,» and «Poetry Class,» where students will learn about literary figures such as Santa Teresa de Jesús, San Juan de Cruz, Góngora, and Lope de Vega, among others.
The cultural councilor highlighted that this is a valuable opportunity for all audiences. For more information, individuals can visit the El Pesós building or call 667 38 95 30.
