The Ministry of Development, Territorial Articulation, and Housing has held a new meeting with the management of the Virgen Macarena University Hospital in Seville, which is part of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, to provide detailed information on the works of the third section of Line 3 North, which will begin in May with an investment of 173 million euros. Although the first traffic disruptions will not occur until autumn, the Ministry of Development has already outlined strategies to minimize the impact of the works on the hospital’s daily operations. Among the measures highlighted are partial cuts in phases to always allow access to the healthcare center and the creation of a parking area with direct connection to public transportation, in coordination with the Seville City Council.
This meeting is the fourth one held by the Ministry of Development with the hospital’s management over the past year to address the works of the third section, which runs along a one-kilometer route through Doctor Fedriani Avenue and San Juan de Ribera Street to the Historical Roundabout. The technicians from the Ministry of Development and the works management have specified that they are working on a mobility plan, in coordination with the Seville City Council, to reduce the inconveniences caused by the works.
This plan focuses, first and foremost, on a series of traffic diversions or partial cuts in phases to ensure continuous circulation and access to the hospital. Thus, the hospital has been informed that there will always be a lane open for emergency vehicles and private parking owners. Similarly, pedestrian accessibility will be ensured, a key issue in an area that houses not only the Macarena Hospital but also shops, which have also been informed of these mobility measures in several meetings.
Likewise, in coordination with the City Council, a project is being developed to adapt a nearby plot as a parking area to compensate for the loss of parking spaces in the area due to the works. This parking area will have a direct connection to the hospital through Tussam bus lines.
Finally, the management of the Virgen Macarena University Hospital has inquired about the vibrations that the screens may generate. Regarding this issue, the Ministry of Development will monitor and monitor these vibrations, as well as implement systems to minimize noise.
This meeting is part of the work schedule with the Hospital and City Council, as well as previous meetings with institutions, merchants, and residents to inform them of the progress of the Line 3 North project and address their concerns. In these meetings, the need to have a detailed plan from the contractor, once the contract is formalized, to precisely define the work schedule has been emphasized.
The works of the third section of Line 3 North were awarded for more than 173 million euros and are co-financed with European funds, as Line 3 North of the Seville Metro is a strategically important operation of the Program in Andalusia Feder 2021-2027. The route runs for a length of 1,013 meters along Doctor Fedriani Avenue and San Juan de Ribera Street, ending at the intersection of the latter with Muñoz León Street, at the intersection of the Historical Roundabout.
The solution, like the two sections currently under construction between Pino Montano and Ronda Urbana Norte, is the so-called ‘cut and cover’, a false tunnel between screens for a double track, except in the vicinity of the hospital, where the existing underground parking will be preserved using the tunneling technique. This passage under the hospital’s parking lot will actually be the deepest of Line 3 North, at 20 meters underground. Additionally, it includes the construction of a station next to the hospital, whose design will take into account its future function as an interchange, preparing the level corresponding to the platforms of the future Line 4.
