Mijas, June 6, 2025 – The Mijas City Council, through the Tourism Department, has inaugurated a new exhibition of local craftsmanship featuring Maika Hernández and María Vega, members of the Mijas Craftsmen Association. The exhibition can be visited throughout the month of June at the Mijas Pueblo Tourist Office.

Tourism Councillor, Francisco Jerez, has emphasized the value of such initiatives: «These exhibitions reinforce our cultural identity and support local talent. Mijas is a municipality with a rich tradition of craftsmanship, and it is essential for both residents and visitors to appreciate the work of our artisans.» He also highlighted that the Tourism Department is «committed to initiatives that connect culture and art with the visitor experience. This exhibition is an opportunity to discover not only unique pieces but also the stories and processes behind each work.»

Artisan Maika Hernández presents a showcase focused on her copper jewelry work. «I wanted to bring a small sample of what my work as an artisan entails. Not just the final result, but also the process: images, tools… often we see a piece and are not aware of the craft behind it,» she explained.

Maika, who learned her technique in Chile, mentioned that «after fifteen years in this profession, the last four I have focused on copper, a very noble material with many possibilities. I buy sheet metal, wire, profiles… and from scratch, with saw, file, fire, and hammer, I craft each piece.» Her jewelry, strongly inspired by nature, is characterized by an organic aesthetic: «I have always been connected to plants. I think my time has come, and a botanical collection is growing. Nature does not have straight lines: there are curves, there is texture… it’s organic jewelry, letting the material dictate.»

On the other hand, ceramist María Vega wanted to showcase in this exhibition a journey through her evolution as an artisan: «I have focused on telling my story from when I started until now. The pieces I have brought also reflect the people I have learned from and collaborated with. For me, ceramics is also about sharing.»

María works with different techniques, such as the lathe, hand modeling, or the use of molds, adapting to each piece according to what she wants to convey. «I like to make household items, useful for everyday life. I believe that this brings tradition to the present: that a piece is not luxurious, but accompanies you in your daily life,» she pointed out. «I also restore old objects, do some restoration… ceramics have the ability to connect the practical with the beautiful,» she added.

The exhibition can be visited during regular hours and is free of charge.

With this proposal, Mijas continues to support the work of its artisans and promote craftsmanship as a cultural and tourist asset of the municipality.
