Ronda será sede de la Escuela de Verano de la Fundación Culturas Constructivas Tradicionales

It is an itinerant training program aimed at Architecture students from around the world that promotes the knowledge and conservation of architectural and urban heritage

The municipal delegate of University, Ángel Martínez, together with representatives from the Traditional Constructive Cultures Foundation, has announced the course that will be held this coming summer at the Convent of Santo Domingo and will have the collaboration of the City Council of Ronda.

Thus, from July 7 to 20, Architecture students from different parts of the world will delve into the urbanism, architecture, and traditional construction details of Ronda. This training includes the creation of design proposals for different public spaces, which will also be part of an exhibition. Along with on-site knowledge of urbanism, experts in local vernacular architecture and traditional construction techniques will give lectures on these topics. «We are very pleased to host this Summer School of the Traditional Constructive Cultures Foundation because we believe it will be very positive for a city like Ronda, an ancient city that we have an obligation to preserve,» said Martínez.

The Traditional Constructive Cultures Foundation aims to promote and boost the study, protection, teaching, dissemination, and conservation of traditional Construction, Architecture, and Urbanism specific to different regions of the world.

According to the coordinator of the Summer School, Alejandro García Hermida, these courses have been held annually since 2014 in different locations in Spain and Portugal with the objective of understanding and preserving the construction, architectural, and urban tradition of the cities where they take place. «We want to maintain traditional crafts, the use of local materials, work wisely with the climate, and design spaces that are welcoming and habitable for most of the year, but with a contemporary architecture. And that is what we miss in current academic programs,» explained García Hermida.

Hand drawing, on-site analysis of the best precedents in each region, lectures by various guest experts, and demonstrations by local construction masters serve as the basis for the development of new urban and architectural projects that draw inspiration from local tradition.

Led by an international teaching team, the aim is to introduce participants, mostly young architects and architecture students from around the world, to design methods aimed at creating more beautiful and durable ensembles, better integrated into the existing context, and capable of enhancing and enriching the local construction culture, as indicated by this Foundation.

Also present at this presentation was Leopoldo Gil Cornet, who will be among the speakers in Ronda in July. Gil Cornet has been the President of the Historical Heritage Service of the General Directorate of Culture-Príncipe de Viana Institution of the Government of Navarra since 1986, and a professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra since 1985, where he has long taught History of Architecture and has become the Coordinator of the Specialization in Restoration and Rehabilitation of Architecture since 2000.
