The Spanish Association of Health Communication (AECS) has designated Torre del Mar as the World Capital of Telehealth, making it the venue for its second Congress.
The Deputy Mayor of the municipality of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Pérez Atencia; David Segura, Councilor for New Technologies; Miguel Muñoz-Cruzado y Barba, President of the Organizing Committee; and Adolfo Moyano, CEO of the company Mickrea, presented on Monday morning the launch of the II World Congress on Telehealth, which will take place in Torre del Mar on May 22 and 23, 2025.
In Pérez Atencia’s words, this event aims to «improve the quality of life of people. In this context, the Spanish Association of Health Communication (AECS) has designated Torre del Mar as the World Capital of Telehealth, making it the venue for its second Congress.»
Under the motto ‘Telehealth = Bringing Health Closer’, Atencia pointed out that «this event will bring together specialists, academics, researchers, and professionals from different countries. A scientific meeting with a marked transversal character, as it will allow analyzing the relationship between technology, health, and communication, at a time of special relevance due to the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence and its health applications.»
The Congress, as the councilor added, «aims to become an international benchmark and a space for dialogue and cooperation between strategic sectors. Torre del Mar, with its hospital vocation and commitment to innovation, is projected as a platform of knowledge and a reference point in the development of telehealth on a global scale.»
The Councilor for New Technologies of the Municipality of Vélez-Málaga, David Segura, presented the congress at a press conference today, accompanied by the Deputy Mayor of Vélez-Málaga and Deputy Mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia; Miguel Muñoz Cruzado, President and founder of the Spanish Association of Health Communication; and representatives of the company Mickrea, a technical collaborator of the event.
«Torre del Mar becomes the world capital of telehealth this week, thanks to a unique event in its format and reach. It is an honor that, after the successful 2022 edition, our land has been chosen again as the venue for this international congress,» highlighted David Segura.
The congress will start this Thursday at 8:00 a.m. and will bring together professionals from the health, technology, and communication fields. Over two days, discussions will focus on the benefits, challenges, and ethical frameworks of telehealth, as well as the role of the media in health education and promotion.
«We want to specially thank Miguel Muñoz for his strong commitment to Torre del Mar. We know he was born in the Canary Islands, but we already consider him a true local. Also, thanks to the company Mickrea for making this unprecedented technological deployment possible,» added Segura.
The President of the Organizing Committee of the International Congress on Telehealth, Miguel Muñoz-Cruzado y Barba, expressed his pride and gratitude for being able to once again hold this global event in Torre del Mar, a place that, although not his birthplace, he deeply considers his own.
«It is a true honor for me to present this new edition of the World Congress on Telehealth from Torre del Mar. Although I was born in the Canary Islands, this town holds a very special place in my heart. We have lived a wonderful stage here as a family, and this initiative emerges precisely as a gesture of gratitude towards this land,» emotionally declared Muñoz-Cruzado.
After the success of the first edition, also held in Torre del Mar in 2022, the congress has received proposals from international cities like Monterrey (Mexico) to host future editions. However, the President of the Organizing Committee has reaffirmed his commitment to Torre del Mar: «We have received numerous proposals to move the congress, but we have decided to keep it here because we firmly believe in the potential of this municipality. Torre del Mar deserves to establish itself as an international reference in digital health.»
During his speech, he emphasized the importance of associating the brand Torre del Mar with the concept of telehealth, a booming discipline that allows for improving remote healthcare and expanding global access to medical services. «We want Torre del Mar to be like that lighthouse that guides healthcare professionals on the right path.»
Muñoz-Cruzado also expressed his gratitude to the City Council of Vélez-Málaga and, in particular, to the Deputy Mayor’s Office of Torre del Mar, for their unwavering support. «Everything has been made easy. The support we have received from Councilor David Segura and the municipal team has been key for the success of this event.»
Finally, he highlighted the technical work of the company Mickrea, responsible for the event’s connection and transmission infrastructure. The congress will have live streaming to 152 countries and an estimated audience of up to half a million people connected simultaneously, establishing Torre del Mar as a global hub for healthcare innovation. «It is not easy to connect with over 150 countries in real-time, but we are achieving it. This congress is for all of you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.»
The CEO of the company Mickrea, Adolfo Moyano, has highlighted the logistical and technological effort behind the II World Congress on Telehealth, which will take place on May 22 and 23 in Torre del Mar. In his speech during the official presentation of the event, Moyano expressed his gratitude to the City Council of Vélez-Málaga, the Deputy Mayor’s Office of Torre del Mar, and especially the Council for New Technologies, for their strong institutional support. «We have made a determined commitment to this congress. We want to thank Councilor David Segura in particular for his perseverance in making this happen, as well as the City Council and the Deputy Mayor’s Office for making it possible.»
Mickrea has been responsible for coordinating all the communication infrastructure, digital logistics, and live streaming, a task that, according to Moyano, has required intense planning and technical execution over the past months. «It is not an easy task to coordinate a 30-hour uninterrupted broadcast and reach 152 countries simultaneously. We have designed and managed a comprehensive digital strategy that has included social media, audiovisual content, informative pieces, and the development of a specific website from scratch.»
The congress, to be broadcast from 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, until the evening of Friday, May 23, will address multiple specialties related to telehealth, such as tele-nursing, tele-pharmacy, tele-psychology, and communication in health, among others. «We will have a continuous program adapted to different time zones, allowing professionals from around the world to connect in real-time and access cutting-edge content in digital health.»
Adolfo Moyano also highlighted the role of the team accompanying him, especially mentioning his colleague Rosemary, responsible for the communication and marketing area of the project. «Rosemary, who could not be with us today, has led with great professionalism the entire international dissemination strategy. It has been a team effort that demonstrates Mickrea’s commitment to innovation in healthcare.»
With enthusiasm, the CEO concluded his speech showing his excitement for the imminent start of the event: «We are looking forward to Thursday, May 22, to kick off. This congress is an exciting adventure that is already marking a before and after in the projection of Torre del Mar as the world capital of telehealth.»
