Tramschool: Fomentando la educación en movilidad sostenible

Children aged eight and nine enter the classroom. It’s not just another day at school. As soon as they take their seats, the school starts rolling, taking a tour through the marshes of the Bay of Cadiz, the central street of Real de San Fernando, the statue of Camarón de la Isla, or the salt flats of Chiclana. These children are about to receive a lesson they won’t forget, beyond the tour of their land: they are going to learn the importance of traveling on public transportation and doing it comfortably and safely.

The Department of Development, Territorial Articulation, and Housing, through the Public Works Agency of the Junta de Andalucía, has launched the ‘Tramschool’ educational program, a didactic activity carried out on the Bahía de Cádiz Tram (Trambahía). This initiative aims to raise awareness about the benefits of sustainable mobility to the school community.

The ‘Tramschool’, which has recently started, has already welcomed the visit of over a hundred students from 3rd and 4th grade at La Inmaculada School in Cádiz and La Constitución School in San Fernando, and will be extended to the rest of the students from 3rd to 6th grade in Primary Education in schools in Cádiz, San Fernando, and Chiclana.

This program promotes knowledge of the Trambahía, to educate on its use and highlight its efficiency in terms of safety, speed, and accessibility. The day starts with a tram ride, during which students receive explanations about accessibility measures at stops and stations, the operation of ticket vending machines and validators or access turnstiles. Thus, in this first part of the visit, the instructions are focused on how to use transport and basic rules of coexistence.

Subsequently, the group of students moves to the workshops and garages in the Pelagatos Industrial Estate in Chiclana, where they can learn about the maintenance of the train fleet and receive basic road safety notions. In this second part, students learn about the peculiarities of the Trambahía and the emphasis is placed on their relationship with this means of transport not only as users but also as pedestrians, emphasizing road safety.

Finally, the activity concludes with a visit to the Central Control Post, where they can observe the tram’s management in real time. In addition, they are informed about the work carried out by the different professional profiles of the Trambahía staff.

The ‘Tramschool’ program reaffirms the commitment of the Junta de Andalucía to education in sustainable mobility and the promotion of public transportation as an efficient and ecological alternative for the future.
