The Vélez-Málaga Municipal Council is preparing a new and interesting initiative to further establish itself as one of the municipalities with the greatest tradition and projection in the Semana Santa of Malaga and Andalusia. Following the inauguration of the Nazareno exhibition in honor of the famous Granadino imagery Domingo Sánchez Mesa, integrated into the 75th anniversary of Jesús «Pobre El» and available for visitation at the Corrade Museum of the Church of Santa María, the city is preparing to enjoy the «Streets of Passion,» a new festival that will take place on March 1st and 2nd in different locations in the historic center of Vélez-Málaga. This event will have the collaboration of the Provincial Council in Malaga.
The mayor of the city, Jesús Lupiáñez, accompanied today by the president of the Hermandad Association, Rafael Moreno, the provincial delegate for development and infrastructure, María Nieves, the representative of Tito Management Cofrade, Javier Aranda, and the councilor for the historic center, Juan Fernández Olmo, expressed excitement about presenting this unique event, which they hope will attract «residents and visitors interested in learning more about our heritage.» As the mayor stated, «Every day we work with initiatives that continue to increase our city’s significance, considering them a key element in the growth and tourist expansion of Vélez-Málaga.»
Veleña is expected to experience very significant moments and experiences during this grand event. The «Streets of Passion» represent a historical stage that will provide the perfect prelude to our magnificent week, according to Jesús Lupiáñez. He predicts «many surprises» in a full program of activities and gatherings, stating that it is the best way to capitalize on our Coporde calendar with an earlier moment that will further enhance Semana Santa, a tradition of excellence.
María Nieves, the provincial delegate for development and infrastructure, highlighted the originality of the initiative designed by the Local Council of Veleño, as well as the «clear commitment» of the Provincial Agency to our land’s culture and traditions, appreciating the «heritage and roots of the fraternal brotherhood of a city.» She expressed confidence that the «Streets of Passion» will be a sure success.
In turn, the president of the Hermandad Association, Rafael Moreno, mentioned that coinciding with the meeting on the «Streets of Passion,» a Via Crucis will take place, geared towards the youth, who are the present and future of our Semana Santa. This will occur on the evening of the 1st, with three scenes from Cajiz being staged in the Villa neighborhood, «turning Calle Real into the path of bitterness.» The tour will run from Plaza de la Constitución to the Church of Santa María.
Javier Aranda, representing Tito Cofrade, a management company involved in the organization of the «Streets of Passion,» described this event as «unique and innovative,» as something like this has never been done before. As revealed, on March 1st and 2nd, a multi-space will be created with various icons: exhibitions, music contests, throne displays, with the idea that Veleño will be recognized for enhancing Semana Santa in Axarquía.
Visits, exhibitions, and forks for a day
Regarding the structuring of the «Street of Passion» program, the historic center will be transformed into a wonderful setting, with concerts, exhibitions, workshops, and temple tours. It will be a unique event that showcases the best of our culture. The strategic landmarks will be: Plaza de la Constitución, which will host 14 band concerts and a «kitchen» presented by experts Pablo Vega from Ménade and Lourdes from Chinchín; and the San Francisco market, with an exhibition of the Thrones of Virgen de Los Dolores, «El Pobre,» and Piedad, as well as live demonstrations by the 19 local brotherhoods, artisan expressions of embroidery, sculpture, or photography, and roundtable discussions and children’s workshops.
Additionally, guided tours will be conducted, after registration, at different temples in the municipality, which will remain open to the public, providing an effective way for residents and visitors to learn about the cultural heritage of Vélez-Málaga. Among them, the chapel of the Bitter Virgin, Camarín de Piedad, and the Casa de la Hermandad estudiantil will be open to the public. There will even be a special initiative where the public can stand under the throne and experience the unique atmosphere of the processions in the streets of Veleño.
