Vélez-Málaga is getting used to hosting large cultural, musical, and leisure events, as well as sporting events. After successfully hosting the prestigious Andalusian Taekwondo Championship last weekend for the sub21 and master categories, the municipality is gearing up to host another regional event. This weekend, on Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 9, the Senior Andalusian Badminton Championship 2025 will take place at the Francisco J. Aguilar sports hall. This event is a national ranking competition that will bring some of the best specialists in Andalusia and Spain to our region. The championship is organized by the Andalusian Badminton Federation and CB Vélez-Málaga, and is sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Andalusian Government and the Vélez-Málaga City Council.
This event, in collaboration with the Vélez-Málaga Badminton Club, presents a unique opportunity to promote sports among our residents and in the local community. This was emphasized by the Sports Councilor of the Vélez-Málaga City Council, Manuel Gutiérrez, during the presentation of the sports competition along with the representative of the Andalusian Badminton Federation, Esther Sanz, and the member of the Vélez-Málaga Badminton Club, Álvaro Moreno.
«This is a nationally renowned event that comes to Vélez-Málaga attracting top-level athletes and their families and supporters, providing a unique opportunity to showcase everything our municipality has to offer in terms of sports, culture, heritage, and leisure,» emphasized the councilor, who is committed to organizing major sporting events and promoting physical activity among citizens for their health and values. Gutiérrez pointed out the importance of sports for the youth in their formative years, where sports play a crucial role.
Esther Sanz, a representative of the Andalusian Badminton Federation, expressed her satisfaction that Vélez-Málaga is hosting the Andalusian circuit and dedicated this tournament to local fans with affection. She also mentioned the participation of a total of 21 regional clubs, with ten of them belonging to the province of Malaga. «We are confident that it will be a resounding success,» she predicted.
On the other hand, Álvaro Moreno, representing the Vélez-Málaga Badminton Club, highlighted the role of our region in the discipline, as 14 club members will compete in the weekend tournament starting at 10:00 am on Saturday with preliminary rounds and culminating on Sunday with semifinals and finals.
The Senior Andalusian Championship, held at the Francisco J. Aguilar sports hall in Vélez-Málaga, marks a milestone for this sport in our locality, as it is the first time it has come here with players from all Andalusian provinces. A total of 122 players will be in the municipality, competing in age-diversified categories ranging from 30 years in category A-1 to super veterans plus, with participants over 70 years old. Both the municipal representative and his companions encouraged the public to attend the sports hall, promising an unprecedented sports spectacle in Vélez-Málaga with a high level of play.
