Vélez-Málaga apuesta por la movilidad sostenible con flota de autobuses híbridos modernizada

El Ayuntamiento de Vélez-Málaga continues to advance in its commitment to sustainability and the modernization of public transportation. This Monday, three new Mercedes-Benz hybrid buses were presented at the La Fortaleza esplanade, adding to the two vehicles that were incorporated last October, completing the total renewal of the urban bus fleet, now consisting of five hybrid vehicles, except for the two minibuses.

The introduction of these new models represents a qualitative leap for urban mobility in the municipality, which will now have more efficient, less polluting vehicles that are fully adapted to the users’ needs. The three new buses will operate on lines 1, 2, and 3 in the urban core of Vélez-Málaga.

The vehicles presented are Mercedes-Benz CITARO HYBRID models, the best-selling urban bus in Europe, with over 60,000 units in circulation. It is a 12-meter bus, with a low integral floor, equipped with low-emission diesel hybrid technology. Thanks to an energy recovery system during braking and coasting, the vehicle manages to reduce fuel consumption and decrease pollutant emissions by 99%, complying with the strict EURO VI regulations.

Furthermore, this hybrid technology does not require batteries, reducing maintenance costs and extending the vehicle’s lifespan. It also does not need specific installations or certified personnel in high voltage, as it operates at a voltage below 48V. The buses also incorporate the FOGMAKER fire suppression system, enhancing passenger safety.

In terms of design, each bus can accommodate up to 26 seated passengers and 69 standing, including reserved spaces for people with reduced mobility and wheelchair space. They feature an electric ramp with integrated LED strip, kneeling system at stops to facilitate access, electric doors with anti-entrapment sensor, tinted windows, and advanced air conditioning.

The Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, emphasized that this addition represents «an important step towards a more modern, sustainable city designed for its residents.»

«Renewing the bus fleet is not just about changing vehicles; it is about improving air quality, reducing noise, and making the daily lives of thousands of residents who rely on public transport more comfortable. These new buses symbolize a forward-looking city that invests in technology and quality of life, aiming to make moving around Vélez-Málaga easier, cleaner, and safer,» stated the mayor.

On the other hand, the Councilor for Transport and Mobility, Celestino Rivas, highlighted that this action «reflects a mobility policy designed with common sense and a vision for the future.»

«We are promoting an efficient public transportation model, environmentally responsible and fully accessible. Investing in a hybrid fleet is investing in the health of our residents, in a less polluted city, and in fairer mobility for everyone, from the youngest to the oldest or those with mobility difficulties,» explained Rivas.

Also present at the event was the director of the Alsa Mediterráneo Zone, Valeriano Díaz, who emphasized the collaborative work between the administration and the operator to enhance public service.

«With the introduction of these three new vehicles, we fulfill our commitment to renew and modernize the urban fleet of Vélez-Málaga, which now has five hybrid buses circulating its streets. This represents a significant reduction in pollutant emissions and noise, making the city a more pleasant and sustainable environment. We are very pleased with the result and the boost it provides to continue promoting the use of public transport in the municipality,» stated Díaz.

With this initiative, Vélez-Málaga solidifies its position as one of the leading municipalities in eastern Andalusia in terms of a firm commitment to an innovative public transportation model, adapted to the new climate, social, and technological challenges. The new hybrid fleet is also a key step within the sustainable urban mobility strategies that the City Council is progressively implementing, in coordination with various areas and with the support of specialized operators such as Alsa.
